⭐ Lion's Head Sunrise/Sunset Hike
Hike up Lions Head, Cape Town's most Instragram'able hike for sunrise or sunset. We enjoy some amazing photo opportunities before our descent. During a sunset hike, we will hike to the summit and then drop down to a lower, more quiet section (less crowds) to watch the sunset and start the descend before it gets completely dark. During a sunrise hike, we may hike the first part in the dark using our flashlights (provided) and watch the sunrise from the summit. This hike has been an age old tradition for locals especially during the full moon and on clear/windless nights/mornings where the lights of the city below dazzle and the moon and stars show off its beauty in the night sky. Other things to note Wear clothing you are comfortable hiking in. Ensure you wear descent pair of hiking/walking shoes. A fair level of fitness is required. You need to be comfortable with heights. Start times vary based on Sunset and Sunrise and it is critical that we start on time in order to witness Sunrise/Sunset

Discover township life with a local
I'll be your guide on our interactive walk exploring the authentic diversity of township life. At first glance, life may seem a daily struggle but delve deeper and we’ll find a place of friendship and resilience. Our itinerary begins at MADaboutART, a non-profit organisation using art and creative expression to support children to make positive life choices. You'll see our gallery of narrative artwork telling inspirational stories of the lives of children in the township. In the streets around MADaboutART you’ll experience the culture and ways of the township. We'll see many sights along the way; traditional wooden homes and Government-built brick homes, cattle and pigs grazing, daily laundry, every day is different. We’ll visit the corner shop to find out which foods are family favourites. Finally, we return to MADaboutART to meet the children as they sing, paint, bead, whatever the activity of the day is (curriculum dependent). On Sunday mornings we can join a local church congregation for part of their service. We hope you'll take a little township magic home with you (and leave a little piece of your heart with us) Other things to note: Unique gift items for sale made by children at MADaboutART (R50-R250), bead bracelets, cards & art. Transport available at extra cost. Ground can be uneven, let me know if you’d find this difficult

Lion's Head Sunset Hike
Our Lion's Head hike starts with a short brief of the route description and safety guideline at the trail display location. The route starts on the lower contour through groves of silver leaf trees with breathtaking vistas of the city of Cape Town with ever-changing views as it spirals up around Lion's Head. As the track narrows to a single path you will see the paragliding launch pad before continuing along the stepped for a further 30 minutes before coming to an upward-tending path with Table Mountain rearing up high above. We then continue steeply upwards to the first ladder, before traversing left along a shelf with a chain handrail until you reach a fork, where you have the choice to either veer left to circumnavigate two rock pitches, or to turn right and climb the rock pitches. I often like to show the Table Mountain range of the twelve apostles and take the more scenic route around than the vertical rock pitches, to gain the upper crest of the southeast ridge we follow the obvious well-worn path via some scrambling and a ladder to the 669-meter summit, just in time for sunset. Then little by little, the city lights will turn on to offer a new sight for our way down you will be provided with a headlamp.

Scrambling and hiking Table Mountain off the beaten path
Your hike begins behind the lower cable station at 480 meters above sea level the first 15 minutes of the hike are the toughest. You are encouraged to take it slow until you reach the contour path, often a good place to remove some layers of clothing and enjoy the fantastic views over Cape Town as well as Lion's Head and Signal Hill. At this point, the route splits, as you cross over the contour path and head right up a series of low rock steps to a platform on the skyline of the buttress. Look out for the Venster (window) on your left a little way up the gully, which provides a perfect photo stop to view the unique Table Mountain rock formation. Following your stop at India Venster, you will carry on back up the gully and off over the top. From this point, you can take in the spectacular views of the upper part of the hike. The path then follows a traverse below the cliff at which stage scrambling over rock and going up with the help of metal staples will bring you out of a small gully and on to a boulder field. You can then pick up the cairns across the boulders to a grassy terrace. Afterwards, your path veers around to the left into the shade of the mountain following a ledge and granting you amazing views of the glittering coast of the Atlantic for the final stretch up to the Table Mountain.

Lion's Head sunrise or sunset trail run
Our figure of eight sightseeing trail run is 10 kilometers in length and start at the base of Table Mountain going along the east side of Lion's Head and Signal Hill then crossing over at mid distance toward the West side of Lions Head all around and back where we started. The area we run through forms part of the Cape Floristic Region and thus supports a high diversity of endemic flora. The trail is mostly along well-trodden hiking path and offers spectacular views of the Atlantic seaboard, the West Coast, Table Bay, Cape Town, Table Mountain and the bigger mountain ranges surrounding the Cape area. Lion's Head Signal Hill trail run is a rewarding run without too much effort. The best time of the day is at sunrise to get the morning light on Table Mountain and over the city of Cape Town or at sunset to get the views of the sun setting over the Atlantic seaboard. It is not a race and bringing your camera is compulsory. There is no better feeling that sucking down huge gulps of fresh air in the early morning sunrise and to reconnect with Mother Nature.
